India reopens dozens of airports for civilian traffic – officials

Posted on May 12, 2025 by

Flights to the northern and north-western regions of the country had been canceled due to the conflict with Pakistan

India’s aviation authority has announced that 32 airports in northern and north-western regions of the country have reopened. The facilities had been closed due to airspace restrictions amid heightened tensions with Pakistan.

The airports, including those in Srinagar, Chandigarh, and Amritsar, are once again available for civil aircraft operations, the authority said in a statement.

The airport closures began on May 9 after the launch of India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, which involved airstrikes on suspected terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Twenty-four airports were initially shut down on Friday, with the number increasing to 32 the following day.

The decision to reopen the airports was made after New Delhi and Islamabad continued to uphold a ceasefire agreed on May 10. There have been no hostilities between the Indian and Pakistani militaries on Monday, the Indian Army said.
